LSU named National Pitching Staff of the Week
The LSU pitching staff came into the week with a big challenge ahead of itself. Take on in state foe Louisiana Lafayette and then match up with the #3 ranked Arkansas Razorbacks. It what was a highly anticipated match up, the Tigers staff held serve as LSU went 4-0 on the week gaining a huge sweep of Arkansas and earning the InsidePitching.com National Pitching Staff of the Week Award. The midweek started off right as LSU employed the all staff approach sending ten pitchers to the mound to shutout Louisiana Lafayette. Joe Broussard picked up the win tossing two innings as he was followed by nine others who helped complete the three hit shutout. As a staff they walked just three and struck out twelve.
Making quick work of the midweek activity, pitching coach Alan Dunn had to prepare his staff for one of the best teams in the nation with the Arkansas Razorbacks. In what many thought would be a low scoring affair, LSU beat Arkansas 10-6 with Kevin Gausman battling for the win. In his 6 2/3 innings of work, he struck out 12 while walking 2 and giving up 5 hits. Four relievers followed him to finish up the final 2 1\3 innings allowing three hits, one walk and striking out 3.
The pitching intensity picked up the final two games of the series as Ryan Eades carried LSU for 7 1\3 innings allowing just one run on five hits while walking one and striking out eight. He left the game in a 1-1 tie as Chris Cotton pitched the final 1 2\3 innings to pick up the win. He allowed no hits and struck out one as LSU scored in the bottom of the ninth to win 2-1.
The final game of the series once again found pitchers dual as the LSU staff has to carry ten innings to complete the sweep and finish off the Razorback offense. Four LSU pitchers scattered just five hits while allowing two runs. Aaron Nola, Nick Goody, Chris Cotton and Joey Bourgeois combined to walk only one and strikeout 16 over the eleven-inning affair.
For the week, the Tigers staff helped Paul Mainieri’s club to a 4-0 record and a huge sweep over conference rival Arkansas. Over those four games, LSU allowed just nine runs on 21 hits, walking just 8 and striking out 52 opposing hitters.
The LSU staff is led by veteran pitching coach Alan Dunn who has 22 years of experience as a pitching coach at the professional level. Now in his first season at LSU, he is already making an impact as the Tigers sport a solid 3.04 earned run average with 263 strikeouts in just 254 2/3 innings pitched. Considered by many to be a huge hire for LSU this past summer, Dunn will quickly become one of the most highly respected pitching coaches in the country. His record for developing talent at the professional level is well documented and his impact has been already felt for the LSU pitching staff during this 2012 season.
