Valparaiso earns National Pitching Staff of the Week
The week of April 16th in college baseball finds us a new InsidePitching.com National Pitching Staff of the Week. The award need not travel far as last weeks winner in Purdue which is located in West Lafayette, Indiana is just a mere 80 miles from this weeks pitching staff at Valparaiso University. The Crusader pitching staff put together a tremendous week as they went 3-1 against a pair of in-state rivals. Their week started with a 16-inning affair with Indiana State and finished with a three game sweep of Butler.
Indiana State entered the game as one of the nations top offensive teams in both runs scored and batting average but a collection of Valpo pitchers would have none of that. While they ultimately lost the game 2-1 in those 16 innings, 6 Valpo pitchers held the Sycamores to just one earned run by scattering 12 hits, and striking out 10.
The weekend brought in conference foe and in state rival Butler. Unlike Tuesday effort, the Crusaders would not need much help as starter Tyler Deetjen went the distance allowing just two runs (one earned) on four hits allowing just one walk and striking out seven. The effort pushed his record to 3-2 on the season.
Game two would be much of the same for the Butler Bulldogs as Valparaiso starting pitcher Kevin Wild would again go the distance for a complete game shutout. Wild surrendered just four hits on the day while walking three and picking up five strikeouts. It took him just 111 pitches to cover the nine innings of work.
Coach Tracy Woodson’s club would complete the sweep behind the great effort of Kyle Wormington and Sean Kennedy. Valpo starter Wormington scattered six hits over his eight innings of work allowing two runs while walking just one and striking out seven. He passed the ball to Kennedy who pitched a clean ninth inning to set up a last inning comeback for Valpo.
On the week, the Crusader pitching staff completed 43 innings of work this past week. They allowed just 4 earned runs on 26 hits while striking out 29 opposing hitters. This week’s effort allowed the Valpo staff to push their earned run average down to 3.58 on the season.
The Valparaiso pitching staff is led by veteran pitching coach Brian Schmack who joined the Crusader program in 2007. Schmack has done a tremendous job with the Valpo pitching staff over his six seasons. During his time they have experienced some of the lowest earned run averages in recent program history to go along with the development of professional prospects. Schmack came to Valpo with extensive professional experience as he pitched for nine seasons at the pro level. He made his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers.
